Set in Fresno, California on April 12, 2014, Unfriended is told through a laptop screencast of high school student Blaire Lily (Shelley Hennig), one year after her childhood friend Laura Barns committed suicide. Laura was a victim of online abuse after a YouTube video depicted her intoxicated and passed out, covered in her own feces. Blaire briefly watches a recording of the suicide and the YouTube video before she is contacted over Skype by her boyfriend Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm). The couple promise to lose their virginity to each other at prom. They’re later joined by three of their friends: Jess Felton (Renee Olstead), Ken Smith (Jacob Wysocki), and Adam Sewell (Will Peltz), as well as a faceless account named “billie227″, who claims to be Laura.
After the group notices the account, they make several unsuccessful attempts to get rid of the user. Laura’s Facebook account starts sending cryptic messages to the friends, which makes them suspect that another girl, Val Rommel (Courtney Halverson), whom they all despise, is simply pranking them. When she is invited to the chat, Jess’ Facebook is suddenly updated with repulsive and compromising pictures of Val at a party, drunk to the point of vomiting and smoking a bong. As Jess and Val have a massive argument, Jess, who attempts to proclaim her innocence, attempts to delete the photos, but they continue to reappear. After finally deleting them, the photos are mysteriously posted on Adam’s account. Text messages appear in the chat room that insult Jess and Val, leading to their argument being exacerbated. After being threatened multiple times by Laura, Val eventually calls 911 to report online abuse, accuses Ken of the harassment, and signs off. Ignoring her threats, Ken states that he did not like Laura because she was nothing but a bully and deserved everything that she received from the embarrassing video of her.
Laura e-mails the friends an Instagram picture of an email that Laura sent Val a year earlier, begging her to remove the embarrassing video and offering friendship. Val rejected the plea and told her to kill herself. When multiple Instagram users scold Val for her cruelty, she is suddenly brought back into the chat. Val is seen silently standing in her bathroom, next to an open bottle of bleach, motionlessly staring at the camera. Concerned, when Blaire calls Val to check on her, Val’s phone is seen vibrating across her counter. Suddenly, her computer abruptly is knocked to the ground and the camera view is upside down. While Blaire speculates that Val is suffering from a seizure, the police arrive and shout out police codes. The group try to work out what happened to Val using those codes, and it is revealed she committed suicide. Though it is not explicitly stated, it is heavily implied that Val was forced to drink the bleach. Val is seen lying on the floor dead, then her video feed disconnects and goes to black.
Laura begins sending photos to the rest of the group and then resurfaces as a camera view behind one of the users. When Ken stands up, he and the remaining friends realize in horror that Laura is in Ken’s room. When Ken finds the source of the camera, his video feed disconnects. When it resumes, Ken is seen being attacked by an unseen force, then shredding his hand in an active blender, before killing himself by breaking the blender then using the blades to slice his throat.
Laura forces the four remaining friends to play Never Have I Ever, threatening to end the loser’s life. Through this game, she reveals dark secrets that put the friends at odds with each other: Jess spread a rumor that Blaire had an eating disorder; Blaire drunkenly crashed Jess’ mother’s car; Mitch kissed Laura behind Blaire’s back; Mitch ratted Adam out to the cops for selling marijuana; Jess stole $800 from Adam and Adam tried to bargain with Laura to trade Jess’ life for his. Adam becomes enraged and uses the game to force Blaire to reveal that she is no longer a virgin, having had sex with him twice behind Mitch’s back. Laura uploads Blaire and Adam’s sex tape on YouTube to prove it. Furious to learn this, Mitch retaliates by revealing that Adam gave a girl roofies at a party, had sex with her while she was unconscious, then forced her to have an abortion when she later discovered she was pregnant.
Blaire and Adam receive messages from their printer, but refuse to reveal what their messages say. Mitch, angry that Blaire and Adam are apparently sending “secret messages,” threatens to log off, to which Laura responds that if he does, he will die. In a high moment of stress, Blaire shows her note: “If you reveal this note, Adam will die.” Adam immediately dies by shooting himself in the face with his father’s gun (under Laura’s possession), as his screen shows his note: “If you reveal this note, Blaire will die.”
Despite Adam’s death, Laura says the game is still going on. She demands to know who defaced her grave. After Jess refuses to admit she was the one who vandalized it, Laura turns all the lights off in her house. As Jess hides in her bathroom, Blaire goes on Chatroulette and successfully gets someone to call the police. Suddenly, Jess’ video feed disconnects. Seconds after, she is shown choking to death on her electric hair straightener. Blaire and Mitch subsequently apologize to each other, thinking that it’s all over. Laura suddenly messages them, demanding to know who uploaded the video of her humiliation on YouTube. After Laura privately messages Blaire on Facebook, asking who posted the video, Blaire admits that it was Mitch who uploaded it. Mitch suddenly dies when he stabs himself in the eye, leaving Blaire alone in the chat room.
As Blaire breaks down crying, Laura thanks her for her help, but tells her that she must confess to one more thing. Blaire tries to placate Laura by showing her past photos of when the two were friends. Laura uploads the video of her on Blaire’s Facebook account, but in this version, Blaire is revealed to be the laughing cameraman saying “I got her”. Blaire attempts to apologize, but Laura tells her that her mistake will live on the Internet forever. Blaire’s Facebook account becomes flooded with hate comments telling her that she caused Laura’s death. Laura tells Blaire that she wishes she could forgive her, then signs off Skype. Blaire, in a state of shock, sits silently when her bedroom door creaks open. Silhouetted hands appear and suddenly close Blaire’s laptop (revealing the movie to be in first person). Seconds later, Laura’s ghost jumps out and presumably kills Blaire.
