Marieme (Karidja Touré) is a 16-year-old black French teenager living in a poor Paris suburb. When she is forced into a vocational track instead of an academic one because of poor grades she decides to skip school. On her way out she is approached by Lady (Assa Sylla) and her friends who ask Marieme if she wants to join them for a day trip to the city centre. Marieme initially declines but after seeing the girls approached by a group of boys, including her brother’s friend whom she has a crush on, Marieme joins them.

Marieme and the girls grow close and they steal money in order to stay in a hotel room where they dress up and have fun. At the hotel Lady encourages Marieme to ignore her abusive older brother’s phone calls and gives her a gold necklace with the name Vic for Victory.

In order to display dominance with a rival girl group, Lady arranges to fight the leader of the group and is beaten and has her shirt torn off. Lady becomes sullen and withdrawn following the defeat. In order to avenge her and prove her own dominance Vic arranges to fight the girl who beat up Lady. After viciously beating her Vic not only takes off her shirt but also cuts off her bra leaving her nude from the waist up. The act is met with approval from Lady and Vic’s brother. Afterwards, flush with success, Vic goes to her brother’s friends house late at night where she orders him to strip.

The following day while hanging out with her friends Vic sees her younger sister with her friends, mugging a stranger. Vic takes her home and is attacked by her older brother who calls her a whore for having sex with his friend.

Afterwards Vic decides to run away from home, stealing her brother’s money and going to work for Abou, the local drug dealer. Though her friends are concerned for her Vic points out that working as a dealer means she will be able to move to a different neighbourhood while remaining in the area her only option is to work as a janitor like her mother while having a reputation as a whore.

While working for Abou, Vic lives in an apartment with two male roommates. In order not to be sexualized she binds her breasts and wears loose baggy clothing. When her boyfriend discovers she has been binding her breasts they fight. Afterwards she goes to a party at Abou’s place where, despite her dressed down look Abou approaches and tries to kiss her. When she tells him no, and pushes him away he becomes enraged and is only prevented from attacking her by several of his henchmen. Vic goes to her boyfriend’s place to tell him she’s done with Abou and he offers to let her stay at his place and marry her. Vic refuses telling him she doesn’t want that life. She attempts to go back home, but despite being buzzed into her building finds herself unable to go in.
